Winter off the slopes
Winter vacation in the province of Salzburg
Cross-country skiing, touring skis, winter hiking, tobogganing, ice skating and more, that’s winter sports away from the slopes.
In winter Zell am See-Kaprun becomes a white glittering winter wonderland. Whether cross-country skiing on the plain, snowshoe hiking and touring skiing up the slope or even tobogganing – it will not be boring with us!
Hiking in winter
Whether you choose snowshoeing on the mountain or winter hiking on the groomed trails, you can enjoy nature in a relaxed way. The region is also perfect for Nordic walking: a tour around Lake Zell on a beautiful winter day is fantastic. If you want to explore the region on your own, just take a look at our winter hiking map! You also have the possibility to join guided snowshoe and winter hikes at ski schools or the Schmitten.
Cross country skiing
As far as the eye can see, the 40km of cross-country ski trails wind through Zell am See-Kaprun and the neighboring communities. On the Schmitten there is a wonderful high-altitude cross-country ski trail around the Plettsaukopf reservoir – with a view of the entire region! On the Kitzsteinhorn you will find a high-altitude cross-country ski trail at almost 3000m – ideal for ambitious training.
Ice skating and ice hockey in Zell am See-Kaprun
You prefer to glide over the ice? Then you should try your hand at ice skating or ice hockey. Depending on the temperature, you can practice these winter sports on the frozen Zeller See, in the Zeller Eishalle or at the natural ice rink in Kaprun.
Zell am See-Kaprun: tobogganing fun for young and old alike
Tobogganing is always a hit: whether during the day with the whole family or in the evening as a couple in the moonlight – fun is guaranteed. Several toboggan runs await you between Kitzsteinhorn and Schmittenhöhe. Enjoy e.g. the illuminated 1.5km long toboggan run from the Köhlergraben through the Schmittental. A bus will take you to the start!
Likewise, you can toboggan down the valley at the Jausenstation Guggenbichl for 2km until 11 p.m.
